Many people today experience uncomfortable symptoms like anxiety, overstimulation or feeling flat, numb and empty.  These are symptoms of nervous system dysregulation, commonly diagnosed as "anxiety" or "depression". 

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION TODAY?

There is no simple answer to this question because there are so many factors involved. However there are some key changes to our lives that stand out. These include increased mental and emotional stress, as well as changes to our physical health and microbiome.

Some of the MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL FACTORS that contribute to these problems include unhealthy relationships, constant mental stimulation, stress and lack of rest, loss of community connections and close friendships, increased movement towards superficial values and the loss of connection with nature and natural cycles.

Some of the PHYSICAL STRESSES to our mental health include nutritional deficiencies due to depleted soils, processed foods and sugar, increased exposure to neurotoxic chemicals, including pesticides, heavy metals and industrial chemicals, changes to the microbiome due to frequent use of antibiotics, increased incidence of allergies and autoimmune problems. 

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AFFECTS OUR MENTAL HEALTH

When we get a virus like the flu, our immune system produces chemical messengers called cytokines which make us feel tired, miserable and socially withdrawn. The same is true for our gut health. When we have a stomach upset or gut imbalance, this can leave us feeling more anxious and out of sorts too. This is why getting a disturbed gut back into balance can really help to improve mood, anxiety and brain function.
